2016 Belle Glos “Las Alturas” Pinot Noir
Monterey, California
The Spanish term ‘Las Alturas’ means ‘the heights’, a fitting name for this vineyard located on one of the highest grape-growing benches in the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA. At this elevation, the sunny but very cool climate creates a wine bearing all the hallmarks of this coastal region: robust, expressive, full-bodied and balanced by a firm acidity.Deep garnet in color with an aromatic medley of black cherry, marionberry, ripe plum and a hint of anise. Dark fruit on the palate with flavors of wild berries, caramelized oak and cacao nibs complemented by subtle notes of vanilla, cedar and a hint of lavender and forest floor. Rich and unrestrained, this wine’s abundant fruit is beautifully balanced by firm acidity and layers of red and black fruit. 91 Pts Wine Spectator
BTG $14.00 Retail $39.99

2014 The Counselor “River Pass” Cabernet
Alexander Valley, California
This wine, made with 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, offers aromas of raspberry, blackberry and cinnamon. On the palate, black currant, cherry, and raspberry flavors mingle with tea and dark chocolate accents. The wine has bright acid — and is smooth and softly textured with black cherry on the finish. 91 Pts Wilford Wong
BTG $11.25 Retail $29.99

2016 Yangarra Estate “PF” Shiraz
McLaren Vale, Austrailia
The PF Shiraz is made from grapes grown on Yangarra Estate’s certified biodynamic single-estate vineyard, grown without herbicides, fungicides, or synthetic chemicals. It is made without additions of any kind: sulphur (preservative), acid, tannin or finings.
While it’s obviously a healthy, squeaky-clean presentation of young Shiraz, this is also a glass full of joy and laughter. It’s bright and stimulating, but not light in any way other than mood, but as a young wine it’s just as carefree in attitude. It’s intense, dark and perhaps like fresh soft liquorice in a way. This is pure, audacious, open-hearted fun. 94 Pts James Suckling
BTG $8.25 Retail $19.99

Great New Zinfa

Delicious new wine from a Zinfandel Legend…

Marietta Cellars returns to their Zinfandel roots with this incredible first vintage of “ROMAN”

Zinfandel “Roman”
North Coast, CA 2015

A blend of 84% Zinfandel, 11% Petite Sirah and 5% Barbera, aged for 12 months in neutral barrels, the 2015 Zinfandel Roman sports a deep garnet-purple color and nose of black plums, blackberries and licorice with touches of tar, charcoal, salami and Indian spices. Full-bodied with firm, slightly rustic tannins, it offers great fruit expression in the mouth with freshness and purity coming through on the long finish.

What is all the fuss about?

Few grapes in the world tell the story that Zinfandel has to tell. The grape arrived to this country in the suitcases of the throngs of early Italian immigrants seeking a new life farming crops in Northern California. These were not trained winemakers. They were farmers, growing plums, apples and almonds but they always planted a vineyard wherever they went to make wine for personal consumption and while many grapes matriculated to the Golden State there is no question that the most beloved among them was Zinfandel. These early wines were rich and fruity and even in many cases in the early days, sweet to the taste of humble pioneering farmers seeking a satisfying red after a hard days work. While Cabernet Sauvignon will always garner the accolades in the landscape of great Californian wines, Zinfandel is the workhorse and perhaps America’s most significant contribution to world’s wine landscape. Plenty of places make great Cab, only Cali makes great Zin. What you may not know is that most of the best Zins are blends as is the wine we are excited to launch today, Marietta Cellars “Roman”.

Marietta Cellars is one of those wineries that has honestly never made a bad wine and what’s more impressive is that they have been doing it for 40 years!!! We love the Bilbro family, owners and operators of Marietta Cellars and have been following them a long time so when they released a new wine, we were scratching and clawing to get a taste. Marietta’s “Angeli Cuvee”, an artful blend of Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Carignan has long been a staple in the Zin-loving community and with the newest addition “Roman”, named for their winemaker the last 30 years, they have added another great Zinfandel to their portfolio that may very well prove even more popular than it’s big brother.
I simply cannot say enough about this new release which reveals both the intensity and power Zinfandel is so well appreciated for but also a graceful aromatic quality that is rarely ever found in these monstrous black wines. Treat yourself to a bottle of this new wine in its first vintage we have a feeling it is going to be a big hit based on our showing at last Tuesday’s tasting.
