Another terrific vintage for this cuvee, the Syrah and Grenache-dominated 2014 Cotes du Roussillon Villages Latour de France Occultum Lapidem was harvested with miniscule yields of 28 hectoliters per hectare. Completely destemmed and aged all in concrete tanks, its ruby opaque color is followed by complex notes of garrigue, leather, plums and violets. Medium to full-bodied, elegant and layered, with a great texture, this fruit-forward, balanced Roussillon is already hard to resist, but will continue drinking nicely for 6-7 years. 92 Pts Robert Parker

2015 Jorge Ordonez & Co • Botani Moscatel Old Vines

Málaga, Spain

A steal that I’ve been recommending for a number of years is the 2015 Botani Moscatel Old Vines. Totally dry and made from vines planted in 1946, 1968 and 1975, from the incredibly steep slate and quartz hillsides of Malaga, this is fermented with wild yeasts in stainless steel, where it’s aged and bottled after eight months sur lie. An incredibly gorgeous flowery bouquet alone would be reason to spend the $18.00 for this medium-bodied, super-fragrant and seductive, crisp, elegant wine. The old vines, the beautiful floral notes and stunning, delicate tropical fruits that the Muscat of Alexandria varietal (the oldest clone in the Muscat family) produces, are just something to behold. For those interested: this is fermented in total stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and bottled early to preserve its incredible aromatics.

2015 Glenelly Chardonnay Stellenbosch The Glass Collection

Stellenbosch, South Africa

In 2003, at the age of 78, May de Lencquesaing, then owner of the famous Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, purchased the estate. With a nod to the French Huguenot settlers 300 years before, she set about planting vines to replace the existing fruit trees, realising her vision of establishing a thriving winery that best utilises the soils and microclimate of the valley and supports local economic development and the community. And thus Glenelly Estate was reborn. The glass collection Chardonnay has a bright and brillant colour, with a slight bgreen hue. The wine has complex aromas of citrus, papaya, melon and pear. On the palette, it displays a beautiful, round and comforting texture with wonderful length and intense fruit complexity. 89 Pts Wine Spectator

BTG $7.25 Retail $15.99

8pm -12 Midnight

This Saturday night Hollywood Vine is hosting its first Blues Night, with a local aficionado, playing tracks from the pantheon of greats, some of which will be familiar and some which will have a distinctly familiar ring – any one  blues song never belonged to any one person long before someone else appropriated it, changed the lyrics (a little), and gave it a new title
Join Tina and DJ Stinky Corners AKA Barry Stock for an evening of music from the human-est of humans, men with “Blind” in their name and women telling the truth about life and love and liquor.

The musical form called “blues” is the touchstone for so much of the rest of what occurred in sound in the 20th century, that it is difficult to overstate its impact. The transformation of suffering, vice, and coded innuendo into a simple but compelling expression hit its stride in the 1920s, and was a source of sales in the hundreds of thousands of copies for self-taught people for a decade or so. Often fame and fortune was followed by all of the attendant demons, and the familiar arc was as it is today, empty pockets and an early death. What was left behind is just as compelling as the day it was recorded, though, and modern sophistication, wit and wry humor are undeniably present.
