Next Tuesday we’ll be tasting a delightful Pinot Gris from Oregon; a unique varietal from Napa, Charbono and three luscious and exuberant wines from the Central Coast of California. Don’t miss it!
King Estate, is located southwest of Eugene, Oregon and produces Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and limited amounts of Chardonnay. The beautiful estate of 1,033 acres is certified organic and includes 470 acres of organic vineyards, as well as 30 acres of fruits, vegetables, and flowers. The Estate is crowned by the charming, European-style winery, where the winemaking process is also certified organic. Acrobat is wine born to introduce even more people to the power and grace of Pinot Gris grown in the gorgeous hills and valleys of Western Oregon.
Some years ago, a group of friends sat around the dinner table on an early spring evening and enjoyed some good wine with dinner. Between them, they shared more than 100 years in the wine business. Together they represent a 30-year veteran of the grape growing business, a Master of Wine, a couple of hardworking wine brokers and a youthful winemaker. One might say they know their stuff. That evening, NO was born. Perfumed, bright fruit and crisp, well-balanced acidity.
Austin Hope came to Paso Robles with his family in 1978, when his parents bought a ranch and planted both vineyards and apple orchards. He was just eight years old when the grapes came on line in 1980s and began playing and learning in the vineyards alongside his father, Chuck Hope. Today, as Hope Family Wines (Treana, Liberty School, Austin Hope, Candor, Westside) third generation farmer Austin Hope is at the helm as director of winemaking and viticulture for the flagship brand. He remains uncompromising in his pursuit of wines of exceptional quality that specifically reflect their growing regions. Westside Red is made from hand-selected estate fruit from the Hope Family Vineyard, which sits in the heart of the Templeton Gap, in Paso Robles. Treana Red, a Cabernet Sauvignon-based proprietary blend, is sourced from top vineyards in Paso Robles.
Charbono is only produced in California, adding to its exclusive appeal. Now there are only 80 acres of Charbono planted in California, half of which are in Calistoga. Calistoga is a sweet spot for Charbono, and most of the older vineyards are there. Today only 16 wineries produce Charbono; with Summers Estate Wines holding the title of Charbono King for producing the largest amount of this special wine annually, about 2000 cases.

Treana Red, 2008
The elements that go into Treana Red are aged 10-14 months in French oak, 65% of it new. In the summer after harvest, a trial blend of the best barrels of Cabernet and Syrah is created and then returned to barrel to marry the flavors. The wine, has a deeply extracted, ruby hue and displays up-front aromas of ripe, dark fruit and exotic spice. Depth and power come from the Cabernet, while a Syrah component lends inviting fleshiness. The wine’s full mouth feel leads to a silky, lasting finish. Luxurious and well balanced.
