For next Tuesday: We’ll Start with a French Sparkling and finish with big SuperTuscan from Italy; in betewen we’ll be tasting a Sauvignon Blanc fron New Zealand, a Malbec Blend from Argentina and a Cabernet Blend from Chile:
Veuve du Vernay is a range of sparkling wines that are produced in Bordeaux, the heart of the French wine country. Oenologist Cécile Terasse is responsible for a range of great valued wines.
Goldwater is one of the oldest wineries in New Zealand, established on Waiheke Island, near Auckland, in 1978. The small operation there produces mainly Bordeaux-style red wines, among the few of that style from New Zealand to have been rated outstanding.
Amancaya, as its elder sibling CARO, from Catena and ROthschild, presents a harmonious balance between the Argentine and Bordeaux styles. A more fruity style coming from the higher percentage of Malbec and shorter ageing. The word AMANCAYA is the native Indian name of a flower of the Andes that you can find in the Mendoza area.
Born in Santiago, Chile, Agustin Huneeus began his career in the wine business there fifty years ago He entered the wine business in 1960 as chief executive officer of Concha y Toro. Then a small winery, Concha y Toro grew to become Chile’s largest winery. He subsequently headed Seagram’s worldwide operations, responsible for wineries in seven countries, including the United States. In 1985, Agustin became partner and acting President of Franciscan Estates. Under his leadership, the ailing company was transformed into a successful group of premium wine estates. In addition to running three wineries in the United States for Franciscan, Huneeus developed two well-known Chilean brands, Caliterra and Errazuriz, later selling interest in both. With his wife Valeria, he purchased the Quintessa estate in Napa Valley in 1989. In the early 1990s, he also discovered the winemaking potential of the Casablanca Valley in Chile. He found the climate, soils and terroir to be perfect for grape growing. Combining over forty years of wine growing experience with Casablanca’s unique terroir, Huneeus set out to craft wines that express the diverse estate’s terroir and build a winery to house Chile’s first Napa Valley-style visitor center Veramonte.
Today the winery Terrabianca is located at the heart of the Chianti Classico region, in the middle of Tuscany, 7 miles from Siena and 30 miles from Florence.

Veuve du Vernay Rosé, NV
Veuve du Vernay Rosé has a nice strawberry nose, toasty, creamy, floral flavors with a hint of white pepper and rose petals, and a long, dry finish. Though quite fruity, it’s not sweet at all, and has bracing acidity.

Goldwater Sauvignon Blanc, 2010
Crisp, with green apple, Asian pear and lemon-lime. The palate gushes with mouthwatering, juicy grapefruit, lemon-lime citrus tones along with green apple and spicy pear flavors that gives way to tasty Key lime pie on the finish. Fresh and vibrant this is what one wants and expects out of a Kiwi Sauvi out of Marlborough.

Amancaya Gran Reserva, 2009
70% Malbec, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon
Deep purple-red color. In the nose the aromas in red and black fruits are appreciated, also blackcurrant and plums with a hint of vanilla and mocha. On the palate it has a nice tannic texture, round and well-balanced. Notes of vanilla and mocha coming from the French oak.

14 months in French (90%) and American (10%) oak, 25% new.
Deep, dark opaque garnet in color with exotic spice, toast and hints of tobacco and mint to follow in the nose to deliver ripe red and dark berry fruit with spicy notes. Round mid palate with elegant yet powerful tannins.

70% Sangiovese – 30% Cabernet Sauvignon; 40% Chianti Classico, 60% Maremma
Bright red ruby in color; dark berry fruit, hint of cocoa and toasted almond, tanned leather aromas follow by a perfectly balanced body, concentration and freshness. Overall balance, solidly built with very well-developed tannins.
