Henry’s Drive Vignerons is the winery of the Longbottom family of Padthaway, South Australia. PILLAR BOX’S LINE which was unveiled in the 2004 vintage, is named for the ubiquitous red Pillar Boxes (mailboxes) that first appeared in the Padthaway region in the 1850s when the modern postal service was brought to australia with the introduction of the postage stamp. The Longbottoms brought in the consulting winemaker Chris Ringland to help in the creation of this highly praised, value-priced line.

PILLAR BOX WHITE, 2008

67% Sauv Blanc, 28% Verdelho, 5% Chardonnay

Sauvignon Blanc from the Henry’s Drive vineyards was of extremely high quality in 2008 – it greatly contributes to the fresh lively aromas of limes, grapefruit, kiwi fruit, spicy fennel and a touch of grassiness. The Verdelho expresses itself through a little pineapple and lychee fruit, as well as textural complexity on the palate, while the Chardonnay impacts on palate weight and the overall smoothness of the wine. The palate displays characteristic Sauvignon Blanc crispness and flinty mineral acidity, an attractive depth of fruit flavor and a persistent finish.

 BODEGAS BOTANI MOSCATEL, 2009

The 2009 Botani was sourced from organically farmed 70-year-old Moscatel de Alejandria vines producing tiny yields. Thirty percent of the wine was barrel-fermented in neutral French oak, the rest in stainless steel. Medium straw-colored with a green tint, it displays a nose of mineral, spring flowers, acacia, and a hint of tropical aromas. The 2009 vintage has produced a wine with extra density and concentration. Although the aromatics suggest sweetness, the wine is dry but very fruity, refreshing, and exceptionally long. It is an outstanding value that over-delivers in a big way.

Deep crimson-colored, it displays an expressive nose of spice box, espresso, plum, and blackberry compote. Full-bodied on the palate with layers of savory black fruits, lots of spice, and enough fine-grained tannin to evolve for years.

FRANCE:

A great comparison to our last tastings from California and Australia. Knowledge and tradition that has passed from father to son for 14 generations in the case of Domaine Droin. Wine regions and vineyards that have been tended and produced wines since Roman times like Saint Roch in Rousillon or La Garrigue in Vacqueyras; this lineup brings the essence of what Old World means and tastes like.

CHATEAU PESQUIE MORMOIRON CUVEE DES TERRASSES, 2008

The 2007 Terrasses Rouge is a custom cuvee put together for importer Eric Solomon. Made from 60-year-old Grenache and 30-year-old Syrah, one-third is aged in small barrels and the rest in foudre and tank. A dense ruby/purple color is followed by aromas of cassis, kirsch, lavender, pepper, and spice. The sweetness of the tannins, abundant glycerin, razor sharp focus, and wonderful depth makes this a superb wine.

BTG $ 5.50                                  Retail $13.99

SAINT ROCH CHIMERES, 2007

Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate rates this wine 92 points with the following comments: “The 2007 Cotes du Roussillon Chimeres of Chateau Saint Roch represents the second vintage from Jean-Marc Lafage’s small Maury estate, and the first to be crushed and vinified on-site. A blend of Grenache and a bit of Carignan from Maury’s schist and chalk with Syrah from high-altitude granite slopes in Saint Paul de Fenouillet and fermented and raised in 500-liter barrels, I tasted it assembled from tank (due for February bottling). This displays the hallmark and downright uncanny Lafage marriage of textural richness with sap and vivacity. A layering of fresh and jam-like black raspberry and cherry is accented by rosemary, roasted meat, and black pepper (this last a signature for Saint Paul Syrah, Lafage suspects). The depth and low-toned meaty richness and sweetness of fruit follow in a long finish, accompanied by a remarkable sense of sheer refreshment. “ Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate: 92 points -August, 2009

BTG $ 7.00                                        Retail $18.99

DOMAINE LA GARRIGUE VACQUEYRAS, 2007

The Bernard family, who also owns the endearing hilltop restaurant called Les Florets that overlooks Gigondas, has turned out a classic Provence -styled effort, their 2007 Vacqueyras. A blend of 80% Grenache and the rest Syrah, Mourvedre, and Cinsault, it reveals notes of smoked herbs, roasted meats, red and black fruits, medium to full body, a supple mouthfeel, silky tannins, and beautiful ripeness, purity, and length Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate: 91points -October, 2009
