“Zaha” Malbec
Altamira, Mendoza, Argentina 2013
The 2013 Zaha Malbec is co-fermented with a little Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, all of them from an Altamira vineyard called Toko, which in Huarpe means stone. It has notes of blackberries, violets, damsons, scorched earth and some licorice. It’s powerful and fleshy, with very fine tannins, great balance and freshness. A structured and layered Malbec that is still a baby and that should develop more complexity with time in bottle. 600 cases.

What is all the fuss about?

Malbec has come a long way. I remember when the first bottles started to trickle into the U.S. with the word “Malbec” written on the label. People didn’t know if it was a grape or a region or someone’s name but when they tried the wine they were delighted at the deep dark color and matching intensity. I used to say “Malbec tastes purple” not really knowing exactly what that meant. At the time, the wines were mostly homogeneously dark and fruity, priced well below their domestic counterparts and went well with beef. But as Argentina has defined it’s voice more clearly with this distinctive grape my appreciation for the complexity of this variety has grown. However, there is one place in Argentina within the large “Mendoza” appellation that produces truly singular, beautifully aromatic, definitive wines…Altamira.

4,000 feet high, the Altamira vineyard represents a cool microclimate and has become synonymous with world-class Malbecs. The soils of Paraje Altamira are very diverse, with patches of sandy, rocky and silty soils dispersed throughout the vineyard. At the moment of harvest, each soil profile imparts distinct aromatic and flavor profiles to the Malbec fruit – floral notes in the sandy patches, stony minerality in the rocky areas, and dark fruits in the silty soils. Concentrated, opulent blackberry, plum fruits and violet floral notes complimented by a sea breeze freshness, fine gentle tannins and velvety texture. Zaha Malbec 2013 is round, full-bodied and very well balanced; a delightful Malbec. Only 600 cases are produced annually by this micro-winery and the results are breathtaking.
