Don’t forget Sake Tasting

Friday July 22nd, 2011 from 7 to 9 PM!!

Next Tuesday come over and meet Alfonso Undurraga as he presents and shares with us 5 outstanding wines

from his two wineries in Chile.

Alfonso Undurraga Marimon like his father Alfonso Undurraga Mackenna and most of the rest of his immediate and extended family, are devoted to the production and promotion and marketing of great wines.

Since the beginning in 1885, the Undurraga tradition has taken hold, producing outstanding wines from some of the finest raw material; grapes nurtured in the earth and sun of the fertile valleys of Chile. The Undurragas were early pioneers in Chilean winemaking, planting French varietals before the turn on the century and using wood barrels crafted by a master French cooper to age the wines and bring forward rich bouquet and flavors. In 1903, they were first to export wines to the U.S.

In the early 1990s, Alfonso earned a degree in Commercial Engineering from UC-Chile then he attended the University of California at Davis to learn about the latest advances in winemaking – on both the technical and marketing sides of the business.  Alfonso then worked in the marketing department of the fine wine importer Kobrand in 1993 at their New York headquarters. He returned to Chile in 1995, spending 16 years in wine marketing;  In 2006, Alfonso formed a partnership with winemaker Jose Miguel Ovalle to produce a range of value-priced varietal wines called Terrapura.  Soon thereafter, he joined his father, two brothers and sister in the creation of Koyle the only true Undurraga winery.

Terrapura consists of five value-priced varietal Chilean wines (Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Carmenere) with the grapes coming from top vineyards in the Colchagua and Curico regions within the Central Valley of Chile.

Viña Koyle is located in the Los Lingues, High Colchagua, in the buttresses of the Cordillera de Los Andes.

This property was selected for having a range of pre Mediterranean microclimate influenced by constant and cool winds coming down from her, and well-drained soils, clay loam texture with gravel and cornerstones in depth. Both are key factors to have an excellent terroir for the production of high quality red wines.
