CASTEL DE VILARNAU BRUT CAVA, NV

50% Macabeo, 40% Parellada, 10% Xarel·lo

Bright, pale yellow colour with golden shades. Candid to the nose, with a good aromatic density, green apple and light undertones from the ageing process (tertiary aromas).
Well rounded in the palate, with a balanced flavor; tasty, smooth and persistent. Well integrated and gently carbonic. Very clean after-taste with a prominence of fruity aromas.

SWANSON PINOT GRIGIO, 2008

Aromas of lychee, Meyer lemon zest and pear can be found in the nose, and are echoed in the mouth. Very long and smooth on the palate, with ample body, this wine is reminiscent of fresh, ripe Pinot Grigio grapes.

“This ZD 2007 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, with its powerful aromas of blackberry, cassis and spicy dark plum is another example of an exceptional vintage from the Napa Valley.

Following ZD’s signature style of producing big, ripe, powerful yet balanced Cabernet Sauvignons, we sourced the fruit from several small, intensely farmed Napa Valley vineyards, each with its own unique “terroir”. Each lot was fermented separately in small open top stainless steel fermentors, and punched down three times a day to ensure an effective but gentle extraction of color and tannins. This wine was aged for two years in American oak. Dark and dense, this wine is bursting with complexity. The core of ripe fruit integrates beautifully with subtle hints of vanilla, clove and mocha, and the lush, silky tannins round out the long, rich finish.”    Chris Pisani, Winemaker

Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar  Rating “90”

($50; a blend of 55% merlot, 35% sangiovese and 10% syrah) Medium-deep red. Complex, scented nose offers redcurrant, plum, mint and oregano. Juicy, silky and sweet, with highly nuanced flavors of ripe yet fresh red and dark berries complicated by aromatic herbs and flowers. Not hugely dense but wonderfully expressive, showing lots of mouthwatering acidity on the long, fresh finish. Not the last word in complexity either, but so much fun to drink that I found it hard to put the glass down. This merits 90 points on its yummy factor alone.

Beer Tasting!

 Our next tasting will take us through a tour of wineries in Italy and Spain that proudly manage to incorporate the flavors and preferences of our time with the knowledge and traditions that generations of winemakers have left behind. So from Veneto to Tuscany, a stop in Spain and back to the hills outside of Turin.

Paladin-Bosco del Merlo Wineries are located between Veneto and Friuli, where the two regional cultures have melted together. The vineyards were planted here, along the ancient Roman Postumia road, on the calcareous clays formed during the last glaciations by the Tagliamento river, resorting to the most modern viticulture techniques.

Vèscine estate is located in Castelvecchi, near to Radda in Chianti, on the most charming hills of Chianti Classico  and lies right at the foot of the historical castle, an authentic jewel for history lovers. The cellar dates back to the 11th century. Vèscine estate grows Sangiovese and Canaiolo grapes for the production of great Chianti Classico and Chianti Classico Riserva wines.

Moscato d’Asti Docg has been produced in the Monferrato area of Piedmont since the XIII century.

Very close to the city of Burgos in the heart of Ribera del Suero DO Vina Solorca Winery is one of the most advance and modern in the wine making process sucessfully marrying ancestral tradition and 21st century reality.

Oskar Blues Mama’s Little Yella Pills

Oskar Blues’ newest beer is an uncompromising, small-batch version of the beer that made Pilsen, Czech Republic famous. Unlike mass market “pilsners” diluted with corn & rice, Mama’s is built with 100% pale malt, German specialty malts, and Bavarian hops. While it’s rich with Czeched-out flavor, its gentle hopping and low ABV (just 5.3%) make it a luxurious but low-dose (by Oskar Blues standards) refresher.

Non-Vintage champagnes are a blend of assortment wines from different years – giving you, the consumer the very best of many different years’ production and total consistence throughout the years.

It has a very perfumed and yet stony character on the nose which is very typical of the Champalou style. A delicate character, but with lots of aroma, very pure, linear and lightly mineral. The palate has an evocative styling, very sappy and composed; this is a deliciously integrated and well-structured wine that just slides elegantly across the palate.

Harvest 71% 2007 29% 2006; Varietal Information 46% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon 20% Cabernet Franc, 9% Petit Verdot Vineyard Locations: Rutherford, Oakville, Yountville, Spring Mountain, and Atlas Peak.

The principal factors that define the Cain Cuvée are the vineyard sources, the vinifications, the blending, and the élévage. The Cuvée blend draws on a few key components to make it what it is. Mountain grown Cabernet Franc contributes the aromatic top notes; Merlot grown on the clay lenses of the valley floor lays down the silky base; selected lots with an extra year of barrel-age layer in complexity. Because this wine is intended to be based more on the perfume than on the palate, we tend to pick a bit less ripe; we try to get the grapes on the inside edge of ripeness, while they’re still fresh and lively. Then, we practice a very simple vinification—just let the native yeasts do their thing—and go easy on the extraction so that we can achieve a more supple mouth feel. After blending, we continue the theme with a more gentle élévage—less time in barrels, fewer new barrels, and less frequent racking. In this way, it is classically Napa Valley, and classically Cain.

“Mara”, the name of a maternal grandmother, is a classic Valpolicella Superiore di Ripasso. It is a wine of experience and tradition. Few wines are capable of expressing their history, their territory and their production technique so distinctly. It is produced with a method that is so special as to place it among the most curious and interesting of wines. This Valpolicella is refermented in the month of January on dregs of Amarone, from which it acquires part of its body and fragrance.

QUPÉ BIEN NACIDO CUVÉE, 2008

50% Viognier and 50% Chardonnay, primarily from grapes grown at the Bien Nacido Vineyard in the Santa Maria Valley.

This is the 17th vintage of this unique proprietary white wine. The aromas show that classic floral, apricot and peach that comes from ripe Viognier… all balanced by crisp, fresh, minerality from the chardonnay.

RED CAR CHARDONNAY BOXCAR SONOMA COAST, 2008

Light, bright yellow. Musky citrus pith, peach pit, iodine and smoky lees on the ripe nose, along with a suggestion of spice cake. Densely packed and spicy, with a restrained sweetness and a strong smoky undertone to its lemon and pit fruit flavors. Finishes with good stony cut, slight warmth and lingering flavors. This first chardonnay from Red Car is made from mostly old Wente clones.

AU BON CLIMAT SANTA BARBARA PINOT NOIR, 2008

This wine is just easy to drink. Whether with fresh grilled salmon or left-over roast chicken or just in a glass by itself, the pretty plum and spring strawberry flavors of ABC SB Pinot are simply delicious. There is nothing pretentious here, just well balanced, nicely textured, brightly fruity wine that seems to go with everything.

ATTICUS WILLAMETTE VALLEY PINOT NOIR, 2007

Yamhill Springs Vineyard (55%) and Hawk’s View Vineyards (45%).

The bright cherry notes on the nose are followed by subtle aromas of blueberry, raspberry, pomegranate and undertones of sweet jasmine, rose and leather. The fresh berries are reflected delicately on the palate and are nicely balanced by light smooth tannins which develop into a lingering finish.

 Less than 275 cases were made

DAVID NOYES ZINFANDEL, 2007

The best of Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel; blended with Petite Sirah 14% and old vine Carignane 11 %. Complex aromas of ripe cherries, rose petal, sage and cinnamon. Full-bodied with enough tannin for aging, but rich enough to enjoy immediately. Lingering aftertaste of red currant and blackberry jam.
