Fun Spirit Tasting 11/5

Fun and tasty cocktails at Hollywood Vine!

This coming Friday we are going to have fun with three spirits of high quality and excellent taste. Alan Kratish from Halby Marketing will guide us  with cocktail recipes and fun tasting notes.

Calvados is a French brandy that comes from the eponymous department of the Basse-Normandie region. It is created using a mixture of sweet and bitter apples which are fermented in to a cider and then distilled to produce a clear eau de vie. This is then aged in oak casks for a minimum of two years, though higher-quality Calvados can be aged well in excess of ten years.

Orange liqueurs are probably the most called for of all fruit-flavored spirits in cocktail recipes, both new and old. From classics like the Sidecar, Pegu Club and Margarita, to more modern drinks like the Cosmopolitan, orange is a taste heavily featured in the world of mixed drinks.

Lemoncello must be produced from Lemons grown in the Amalfi region to be a genuine Lemoncello. Gioia Luisa is the original Lemoncello from Sorrento and only uses fruit from their exclusive private orchards. The rich smooth lingering flavor and bright fruit taste of Gioia Luisa’s Lemoncello promises to deliver an epicurean delight to any beverage or food recipe.

If your thinking of having a holiday party. Thiers no better and affordable venue than Hollywood Vine.

Call us for details!

This Tuesday we’re going old world, with a stop in Portugal, Spain & 3 places in France

Mark Ollivier Pepiere is one of the most consistently outstanding sources of Muscadet and as such a purveyor of some of the wine world’s most outstanding values, not to mention a grower constantly striving to reach new levels of excellence. Jean Brun made his reputation in Beaujolais by taking a vocal position on quality and crafting exemplary wines. Chalk clay soils in the south of Beaujolais distinguish not only the eponymous appellation but also explain the prevalence of Chardonnay, and of which Brun’s is not only the best, but one I rate among the world’s handful of consistently finest Chardonnay values. Bernard Baudry is one of the newer stars of the Loire Valley. We’ll be trying his Chinon (Cabernet Franc) If anyone embodies the promise and spirit of “The New Spain,” it is 43-year-old Alvaro Palacios. His L’Ermita is widely considered to be the one of most Spain’s most important wines. Alvaro studied enology in Bordeaux, while working under Jean-Pierre Moueix at Ch. Pétrus. Vesuvio is set in the prime wine growing area of the demarcated Port region, the oldest demarcated wine region in the world, the limits of which were set in 1756. Quinta do Vesuvio is the most spectacular Quinta in the Douro valley. Located in the wild and serenely beautiful eastern reaches of the Upper Douro valley, It stands alone both in terms of remoteness and sheer grandeur.

Tuesday November 2nd, 2010

6:00-9:00 pm

No charge for tastings

DOMAINE DE LA PÉPIÈRE MUSCADET SUR LIE, 2009

A very pale wine, with a lovely mineral tinge on the nose. It is fresh and pure, loaded with elements of volcanic rock, sea salt and aromatic thyme. The palate continues in a similar vein, lively and acidic at first, with a fatter midpalate. Good style, open and fresh, rather straightforward.

BTG $ 5.25                             Retail $12.99

DOMAINE DES TERRES DOREES CHARDONNAY, 2009

The Terre Dorees 2009 Beaujolais Chardonnay Classic – Brun’s regular Beaujolais blanc bottling, but which is now prominently labeled -classic- – is full of pure, ripe melon and apple; soft and rich; finishes simply but with sappy, juicy profusion.

BTG $ 6.00                             Retail $15.99

DOMAINE BERNARD BAUDRY CHINON LES GRANGES, 2008

The Baudry 2008 Chinon is from young vines (10-15 years old) planted on alluvial soil and gravel near the riverbed. When the Vienne river floods in some springs, Baudry may be found pruning the vines from a boat. This is a wine that is supple and fruity with smoky cherry fruit and is meant to drink young. It mingles tart mulberry with invigorating salinity and pungent herbs on a spare yet polished and persistently juicy palate. This shows a lot of length and refinement.

BTG $ 6.50                              Retail $16.99

ALVARO PALACIOS CAMINS DEL PRIORAT, 2007

30% Garnacha, 60% Cariñena, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah

Deep crimson-colored, it offers up a captivating nose of mineral, lavender, underbrush, and black cherry. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it has excellent concentration, plenty of sweet fruit, a forward personality, and a lengthy, fruit-filled finish. It is a sensational value and a great introduction to the DO of Priorat.

91 Points, Robert Parker’s  Wine Advocate #188, April 2010

BTG $9.25                              Retail $24.99

QUINTA DO VESUVIO POMBAL DE VESUVIO DOURO, 2007

Touriga Franca (60%), Touriga Nacional (30%) and Tinta Amarela, aged for 10 months in French oak

It’s a complex wine that hits the tongue smoothly with a rich dark-fruit flavor that’s followed quickly with a lovely spicy finish. It has a clean mouthfeel. Medium finish promoted by the lusciousness of the fruit rather than the acidity. Hard to resist this wine at this stage yet it still has a good life ahead of it.

BTG $ 10.00                                 Retail $27.99

Wine Tasting 10/26

This week we feature Family owned Wineries in the good old USA.

We start in a small lot nestled in the Red Hills of Dundee, Oregon overlooking the beautiful and serene Willamette Valley where the Black family tend to an exquisite Pinot Blanc. Down in Sonoma Valley the Bundschu family has crafted their ancestral Gewürztraminer since 1858 in their Rhine farm Vineyard, mastering the full expression of the erratic temperatures of 2008 when a lot of neighbors had to give up. Back in Willamette Valley a mix of volcanic and sedimentary soils framed with warm summers attracted Gary Andrus  more than 30 years ago to adopt the Burgundian Grand Cru model and cultivate numerous french clones.  Now we have a world class Pinot Noir that’s a tribute to his vision, pioneering and hard work. The Allomi Vineyard is located on the eastern base of Howell Mountain in one of the more remote areas of Napa County, the combination of a long, warm growing season and well-drained soils creates optimal ripening conditions, which make it an ideal location for Cabernet Sauvignon. The 210 acre vineyard is composed of 35 unique blocks with six different clones. By selecting the best blocks each vintage,  since 1844 the Hess family  produces a distinctive wine notable for its depth and complexity. The history of the Lodi region tells the story of men and women with skill, vision and the shared ideals of hard work and dedication. From its beginning in 1850, the region has been highly respected. These days, Michael and David Phillips represent the fifth generation of growers in Lodi; that explains a Zinfandel that feels and taste like a gold rush.

This tasting is a celebration to experience, dedication and hard work.

Salud!!

We are pleased to have with us Ben Glover chief winemaker of Wither Hills winery.

When Ben’s father Owen realized that none of his children wanted to continue getting up at 5am every morning and milk 200 cows, he thought it best to find a more agreeable farming opportunity in Marlborough. Grapes were just starting to emerge in the district so in the early 80’s a young Ben found himself – instead of milking and feeding out – training young vines and bud-rubbing. From here his passion for wine grew and after finishing a Marketing degree and Post Graduate Oenology studies, Ben set out to gain practical experience overseas; Sonoma in California, Margaret River in Western Australia, Burgundy in France and Puglia in Italy.Located at the northeast tip of the South Island of New Zealand, Marlborough is a place of raw natural beauty, with vineyards bordered by the ocean and the Wither Hills mountain ranges.

St Hallett winery was stablished in 1944 and its wines are recognized as benchmarks of the Barossa Valley. Extensive experience and a continued sense of evolution is personified in winemakers Stuart Blackwell and Toby Barlow. As a Senior Winemaker for over 30 years; Stuart Blackwell has developed a deep understanding of the rich tapestry of site anc climatic variances in the Barossa and an appreciation of both dedicated growers and ‘old vine Shiraz”.

Inkberry winery is located 150 miles from Sydney, in the foothills of the Great Dividing Mountain Range. One of the highest elevation vineyards in Australia at 1,900 feet above sea level.
The winery has a policy of eminence on shoot and bunch contraction rather than irrigation; aspiring to get consistent berry size, color, and balance.

What defines a boutique winery? We believe that you have to answer these questions first: Is it a small number of cases per year produced?.  Is it specialized in the wine world? And more important, Is the quality there? For next Tuesday’s tasting we found two wineries that meet that criteria. Established in 2008, the Rock Wall Wine Company is part of a burgeoning urban winemaking scene. Located in Alameda, across the bay from San Francisco, the boutique winery produces ultra premium wines from multiple California growing regions; a small group of wine industry veterans, including consulting winemaker Kent Rosenblum and his daughter Shauna. The winery offers wine lovers one of the most unique experiences in the wine world. Grapes are sourced from all over California which creates a diverse winemaking environment, complete with different grape varieties, styles and regional flavor profiles. John Eppler’s interest in the wine industry began in 1974, while working in the Neiman Marcus Wine Cellars in his home town of Dallas, Texas. He went on to become a wine steward and sommelier in many fine restaurants in the area. John moved to California in 1986 where he produced his first vintage of Zinfandel, under the name “Zoom”, with grapes from St. Helena. In 2001, John started a new wine company under his own name, JRE-John Robert Eppler Wines, and continues to produce not only Zinfandel, but Syrah, Petitie Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and special blends as well. John’s mission is to produce wines that are rich, intense, and expressive of the soil and climate from which they grow.
