Tequila Tasting 4/29

Tequila is a Blue Agave-based spirit made primarily in the area surrounding the city of Tequila northwest of Guadalajara, and in the highlands of the western Mexican state of Jalisco. The red volcanic soil in the region surrounding Tequila is particularly well suited to the growing of the blue agave, and more than 300 million plants are harvested there each year.

Mexican laws state that tequila can be produced only in the state of Jalisco and limited regions in the states of Guanajuato, Michoacán, Nayarit, and Tamaulipas.

Tequila was first produced in the 16th century near the location of the city of Tequila, which was not officially established until 1656. The Aztec people had previously made a fermented beverage from the agave plant, which they called octli (popularly called pulque), long before the Spanish arrived in 1521. When the Spanish conquistadores ran out of their own brandy, they began to distill this agave drink to produce North America’s first indigenous distilled spirit.

Tony and Jo Ann Truchard have managed a successful vineyard and grown exceptional grapes for over 30 years, they helped pioneer grape growing in  Carneros.

Fess and his son, Eli, originally set out in 1989 to plant a small vineyard and sell fruit to local producers. But, as Fess’ daughter, Ashley explains, “ Fess is from Texas, so he can’t do anything small. “The Fess Parker Winery and Vineyard now farms almost 700 acres on four vineyards throughout Santa Barbara County.

Epiphany began in 1999 with the goal of crafting small production wines of the very highest quality and after several vintages of outstanding critical acclaim , Eli Parker was named “Winemaker of the Year – 2006” by the San Francisco International Wine Competition.
